This painting of a Tulip tree, from my reference photo, is done using the watercolor batik technique on heavyweight Thai unryu paper. A detailed sketch is transferred to the unryu and values from 1(lightest) to 10(darkest) are established. Wax is applied to the #1 value then watercolor in appropriate colors. All watercolor areas must be completely dry before the next layer of wax is applied. This process is repeated thru the darkest values. The actual batik step requires wrinkling the paper then a contrasting color is applied, a light wax layer and all must be dry. The wax is completely removed using layers of newsprint and a hot iron, repeated as many times as needed until no wax is removed. I do not apply any fixative when completed. My background process is a technique I have developed with “reverse negative painting” to provide depth to the piece.
