I was privileged to visit this stunning seaside resort and historic fishing village on the coast of Cornwall, England a few years ago. I happened to be there when the boats in the harbor were beached in the wet sand, waiting to be set free by the next incoming tide from the Celtic Sea. St Ives has been a popular location for artist colonies and the subject of works by such famous artists as J. M. W. Turner and James Whistler.
This painting uses Daniel Smith watercolors mixed with Liquitex matte acrylic medium on 140# Strathmore cold press watercolor paper. The paper is mounted to .75 inch thick birch cradle. It uses extensive masking and pouring and a predominantly warm and light color palette to create the painterly effect and emotional impact I was going for.
