This is one of my series of 20 historic paintings telling the story of the Eastern Legacy of the epic Lewis & Clark Expedition. The Eastern Legacy covers the period from 1802 to 1804. This was the critical formative part of the Expedition, covering the geographic area from Washington DC to Pittsburgh, down the Ohio River, up the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Missouri River - a distance of over 1400 miles.
To work on this 5-year art and history project, I traveled and painted on this route for 2 months in the fall of 2022. I did this painting on location on a scenic high bluff above the River, in Western Illinois. This quite the artistic adventure!
