Dragonflies in September is an acrylic painting on gesso-coated, cradled birch panel. Painting has a textured surface, created by imprinted circles representing bird calls, and collaged paper squares, representing the elements of nature. This painting was created in response to my time near Spark's Lake, in the Central Oregon Cascades, at a location called Soda Creek. In late September of 2023, I stopped by this location on my way home from plein air painting and was rewarded with the gorgeous fall colors of a still pond, and dragonflies floating lazily on its surface. This painting existed in my head for a few months until I painted it in January, when it took on the atmospherically foggy, neutral colors of a fall day, with abstract shapes dancing in the waters.
