"FANTASY SAILS 1"is one of many marine WATERCOLOR WEAVINGS created over the past decades, all reflecting the transient light and varying weather systems intrinsic to large bodies of water. Lake Michigan, for example, can either inspire fairly representational renditions of what I see or, as in this case, the urge to be purely playful. Over the years, I have found this technique uniquely expresses movement in sea, sky, and sails. It requires the painting of two somewhat similar images, followed by intuitively cutting them into vertical and horizontal strips, respectively. These are then edited interlaced, resulting in an almost doily-like fabric (Arches 140 lb.) which is adhered to a matboard support. The edges are sometimes left exposed. It is a labor of love and allows me to give vent to my passion for movement and color.
