I build up my watercolors in many transparent layers, considering shape, color, and value. Details are slowly depicted with more precision until I am satisfied that I've captured the essence of the subject, the expression on a person's face, the moment in time. My favorite subjects are regular people doing ordinary things. I've wanted to paint this young man ever since I took the photograph, but I knew it would be a challenge! The figure is backlit so I wanted to push my darks in order for the highlights to pop.
