The area surrounding the beautiful port city of Vancouver, B.C. is home to numerous harbors, wharfs and marinas. One of my favorites is Steveston Harbour with its many boats of character – each with undoubtedly its own story to tell. This large painting uses Daniel Smith watercolors mixed with Liquitex matte acrylic medium on 1.5 inch thick cradled Aquabord. It was created from a photo I took at the location in May of 2023. It uses extensive masking and pouring and an invented, unnatural color palette to create the painterly effect and emotional impact I was going for. Colors were almost entirely mixed wet-in-wet on the painting itself for shifts and variations in hue and saturation.
