This painting is based on a photograph I took in Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northeast Arizona. We took a jeep tour up the northern side known as Canyon del Muerto. The cottonwood trees and cherry trees were putting out their blossoms at the same time above and behind this Navajo hogan. The massive cottonwood trees gave scale to the canyon walls showing how separate the valley floor is from the plateau above.
