This work was painted as I churned with excitement over a prospective trip to Alaska - I wanted to create strong contrast between neutral and brilliant color to suggest the physical struggle of fishing for salmon. I chose a strong vertical element to represent a jumping fish, and horizontal marks to suggest the water.
Ruth Armitage paints abstract and non-objective work inspired by people and places of personal significance. Educated as an English teacher, her work often begins with a title, which crystalizes her idea. Expressive color and line help weave a narrative that can be obvious or mysterious.
Ruth writes, “I crave variety in my process, so very few things are constant. One thing that does remain constant is working from a specific idea. I work in a series and keep notes on different facets of that idea. Those notes often become the title of the painting.
