My painting was inspired by my love of snorkeling and that feeling that I have when swimming with the fishes. My painting also is a humorous play on the slightly darker overtone of the gangster expression, so I used a simpler monochromatic palette for that feel. Some of the fish are slightly hidden, so the idea is that something else could be lurking there too. I used primarily watercolor paints on watercolor paper to create this painting. I added gouache with the watercolor paints to create more depth and a sense of movement. I used wax sticks in places to help to create a more undersea and mystery feeling to the painting. So, my painting is part mystery, part darker humor and part wonder of being in the depths of the sea.
